baby squid

Location: 1-4 kilometers off shore of Chincoteague, VA. Caught just off the bottom using an epibenthic sled (363 micron mesh) esh)
Date: Summer 2005.

Notes: Very young squid are sometimes caught in plankton nets easily avoided by the swift adults. This one is probably the brief squid Loliguncula brevis, a small squid common in estuarys and bays from Virginia through the Gulf.

Collected and photographed by: W. S. Johnson Goucher College.
