Hermit Crab Hermit Crab zoea (Pagurus)

Location: 1 km off of the beach at Assateague, VA near the bottom in 10 m depths (epibenthic sled), Summer 2005

Notes: This larval hermit crab is probably a zoea of Pagurus longicarpus. Note the 2 spines on the back of the elevated carapace.

The red color is due to staining with Rose Bengal.

These larvae are common throughout the summer at this Assateague location.
