Mantis shrimp

Location: 20-30 miles off shore of Winyaw Bay, SC
Date: June 2005

Notes: This is an early stage mantis shrimp (stomatopod) larva with relatively undeveloped carapace. The preying mantis-like claws are distinctive.

Several genera of mantis shrimps in deeper waters, many with undescribed larval stages thus precluding a definitive identification of this one.
