Mantis shrimp

Location: 20-30 miles off shore of Winyaw Bay, SC
Date: June 2005

Notes: This is an early stage mantis shrimp (stomatopod) larva with relatively undeveloped carapace. Note the prominent suckers at the posterior end. Consult Zooplankton of the Atlantic and Gulf Coast for more information and an illustration of the more advanced larval stage more typical of nearshore waters.

Several genera of mantis shrimps in deeper waters, many with undescribed larval stages thus precluding a definitive identification of this one
