Rhincalanus spp. nauplius (Calanoid)

Collected 30 km off of Georgetown, SC, summer.

Notes: This nauplius is so atypical that I first thought it was the narpacticoid copepod Macrosetella.

This may be Rhincalanus nasutus, a cosmopolitan species often found over continental shelves. The nauplius stage lasts about a week and feeds on diatoms.

Thanks to Vanda Carmo of the University of the Azores for correcting my error.

Collected by: W. S. Johnson and Dennis Allen
