Euceramus praelongus (porcelain crab) zoea

Collected: Chincoteague, VA. summer.

Caught in an epibenthic sled (363 micron mesh) towed just above the surface. 15/03

Notes: Euceramus praelongus larvae are occasional in collections along the Atlantic coast in summer. The long spines supposedly provide protectin from predation while these striking larvae are in the plankton.

The adult porcelain crab is a commensal, living in tubes with the large polychaete, Chaeptopterus.
