Collected: December, 2005 5 km off of Assateague, VA sampling just above the bottom using an epibenthic sled (363 micrometer mesh) in 8-9 m depths.

Notes:These siphonophores were the dominant animals in December 2005 when they reached densities of130 per cubic meter. They were completely absent in January 2006.

Shown here is the swimming bell that contracts to pull a string of delicate feeding 'zooids'. These are usually lost in plankton nets. Siphonophores often have powerful nematocysts that can be painful.
