Hyperia sp. (hyperiid amphipod)

Location: 100 km offshore from Barnegat, NJ. Depths of >200 meters. Caught while drifting a plankton net (363 micrometer mesh) from the back of a boat at night. Summer 2009. Abundant in this collection.

Notes:
Hyperiid amphipods are usually found offshore or in occasional nearshore intrusions of ocean waters. They are typically associated with Jellyfish or other gelatinous zooplankton upon which they feed.
