Snapping shrimp (Alpheid shrimp) larva

Collected: June 2006, 500m off of Assateague beach, VA in 5m depths using an epibenthic sled with a 353 µm mesh net. 15/03

Notes: This unidentified alpheid shrimp may be a member of the genus Alpheus, but the larval stages of this group are largely undescribed. As adults, these shrimp make a loud snapping sound using a large modified claw. The sound may be used to stun prey.
